Murray Tate, co-founder of NOLA Poboys, is a true entrepreneur who has built several successful businesses over the past three decades. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, he temporarily ran a landscaping business and rented a warehouse in the Central Business District in New Orleans. With few residents back in the city and even fewer places to eat, Murray started selling poboys out of the warehouse space using nothing more than a plastic card table and fryer. Despite the lack of décor, the poboys were a hit. After a glowing review in the Gambit Weekly during the first weekend of Jazz Fest, Murray’s poboy business exploded. He soon found and rented a store front on famous Bourbon Street. Today, the restaurant is the top rated poboy shop in New Orleans. Diners from across the U.S. flock to NOLA Poboys for his spicy breading, authentic gumbo and of course, delicious authentic New Orleans sandwiches.
The first mention of the term “poboy” dates back to New Orleans in 1929. During the infamous streetcar conductor strike of 1929, Bennie and Clovis Martin, owners of Martin Brothers’ Coffee Stand and Restaurant in the French Quarter, pledged their support for the conductors – a free meal to any member of Division I94. The Martin family held true to their promise and served free sandwiches for protesters until the violent strike came to an end. During this time, whenever one of the striking men would approach the shop, Bennie Martin’s employees would yell, “Here comes another poor boy.” This solidarity with the honorable members of Division I-94 lays a strong foundation for the Company’s value system.
